Gloved Up Promotions is pleased to announced that Gordy Racette, a former Canadian heavyweight with a record of 39-6, will return to the ring for one more night to make boxing history. He will become the first Canadian to compete – professionally – in FIVE decades.

Racette, now a whopping 63 years old, was raised in Port Alberni and adopted by Nanaimo during the 1980’s. He had amassed a huge following during that time as his exploits in numerous tough man competitions bloomed into a very respectable professional career.

He came up short against the likes of Jimmy Young and former WBC champion Trevor Berbick but holds a marquee victory over Scott LeDoux. According to local legend, a fight with Leon Spinks failed to materialize on the day of the fight in Nanaimo, BC.

“He’s very well respected in the area and everybody knows Gordy,” said co-promoter Andrew Wilde “He is attempting to make history and to raise awareness for a fantastic cause so we feel it would be ignorant of us to overlook his efforts.”

Racette, has worked alongside The Kidney Foundation of Canada for eight years and he is currently raising awareness for Organ Donation. Reports suggest that 90% of people are in favour of organ donation, yet a mere 19% of people actually donate.

Racette is hopeful of change.

“I want to help people that are in need,” he said “I want to keep them from suffering and even dying. The more people that donate, the more people that can be saved. This is just as important, if not more important, than becoming only the third fighter to fight in five decades.”

Only two other fighters in the world have achieved the feat of competing in five decades; American Saoul Mamby and the legendary Roberto Duran from Panama. Esteemed company for Gordy Racette of Vancouver Island to find himself in.

“The decision to promote this fight was not one that we took lightly, but it is one we are comfortable with,” said promoter Terry Strawson “If the athletic commission approve his application and he is cleared by medical staff to compete then who are we to deny his dream?”

“He has an opportunity to go down in history alongside the likes of Roberto Duran. I think we have to respect that. If I’m honest, I’m fairly excited to be apart of it.”
